In 1904 kocht de congregatie van de Dames van het Christelijk Onderwijs uit het Franse Amiens een stuk grond in de buurt van het Sint-Pietersstation. Daar startte men in 1905 een lagere school vergezeld van de bouw van een middelbare school. De school groeide tot een internaat voor meisjes uit België en Engeland.
In de ruime gebouwen vond men onder andere een binnenzwembad, tennisbaan, kapel, wintertuin en slaapzaal.
Met veel aandacht voor etiquette, taalkennis (Engels, Duits, Frans) en algemene kennis trachtte men de meisjes op te voeden tot perfecte huisvrouwen en echtgenotes. Het belang van sport was toen reeds gekend.
Na wereldoorlog II en ook in 1969 kreeg de basisschool nieuwe gebouwen. In 1981 werd een nieuwe sporthal gebouwd en in 1986 een multifunctionele zaal. In 2020/2021 start men met de bouw van een nieuwe polyvalente zaal.
Pas in 1942 kwam er op Sint-Pietersinstituut een Nederlandstalige afdeling bij. Dit werd in 1968 de voertaal.
Nog steeds weet de leuze ‘Gaudere et bene facere’ (gelukkig zijn en het goede doen) ons te inspireren om onze Katholieke levensovertuiging om te zetten in kwaliteitsvol onderwijs. In dialoog met de andere bouwen we samen aan een school waar iedereen telt.
